10 December 2012: Manual for the protection of fish and fisheries in Prespa Print E-mail

The latest publication from the Society for the Protection of Prespa entitled "Saving fish biodiversity in the Prespa basin", which came about under the LIFE+ Information & Communication project "Fish, Fisheries and European Policy in the Prespa Basin", includes subjects such as the ecology of the fish species found in Prespa and the threats they face, the features of local fisheries and the problems fishermen encounter, what is and isn’t provided for under national and European legislation for fish and fisheries, the cross-border aspect of the issue and proposals for sustainable management.

For the first time all the scientific and practical information on the protection of endemic fish populations in Prespa and their mutual relationship with sustainable fisheries has been brought together in one place. The publication is aimed at all organizations which have undertaken, or may undertake in the future, the task of protecting these valuable fish species in order to ensure a sustainable future for fisheries in the area. It could be a useful "tool" in the hands of the appropriate authorities as it sums up current scientific thinking and proposes specific procedures for developing a national plan for the sustainable management of fish and fisheries in Prespa.

The publication is available in a modern and user-friendly electronic format, in both Greek and English. It will be sent to all stakeholders involved with the management of fish and fisheries in Prespa, and also other areas with similar characteristics and issues. A series of presentations will introduce the publication to organizations in Prespa during the coming year.

The director of the Society for the Protection of Prespa, Myrsini Malakou, states in the preface: "The central message revealed in the pages of this publication is that the relationship between the protection of rare fish species and the sustainability of fisheries is reciprocal. The challenge now is to build on the existing scientific information and traditional knowledge in order to ensure the future of this relationship."
